My book "between shades of gray" was about the Soviet Unions involvement in WW2.
A little background info: On August 23 1939, the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany. As well as the promise of non aggression, the treaty had also held a secret agreement that "divided territories of Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland into German and Soviet influence. This would maybe also lead into political and territorial changes in these countries." After the winter war, the Soviet Union annexed these countries. It was only in 1989 that the Soviet Union revealed the existence of the secret agreements of the Nazi-Soviet pact regarding the planned divisions of these territories. "In total, 34,250 Latvians, 75,000 Lithuanians and almost 60,000 Estonians were deported or killed." Twenty million Russians died during the Second World War, so Stalin said he wanted a buffer zone of friendly states around Russia to make sure that Russia could never be invaded again. My Book: The background info provides and example as to what was historically happening in my book. The events in my book relate to the Soviet invasion of Europe because thats where my book takes place. My protagonist is a girl taken from her in Lithuania to a work camp by the NKVD, due to the invasion of the USSR over Europe. "Joseph Stalin waited until September 17, 1939 before launching his invasion of Poland. This was followed by Soviet annexations of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and parts of Romania". Lina (the protagonist) talks about how "Exactly a year before, the soviets had been moving troops over the borders into the country. Then, in August, Lithuania was officially annexed into the Soviet union." Due to this being an event that was hidden from the world for a long time, most people only get the point of view of the germans or USSR and the people forced into work camps usually didnt get to let their voice heard. But, in "Between Shades of Gray," the story is told from the point of view of a 12- year old Lithuanian girl. Other connections made include how these european countries citizens were put into work camps by the USSR NKVD, like instances that happened with the Jews in the Holocaust, and the Japanese Americans in the USA. p.s. hyperlinks include the sources for my cited texts
