Between shades of gray is about a young Lithuanian girl who is uprooted from the life she knew by the Soviet NKVDS, and she was unfairly labeled as a criminal and shoved into a work camp, basically a slave. Another character in the book, Mrs. Aryvadas, was forced to prostitute herself to the NKVD to protect her son under the threat of death if she didnt. This goes against the 6th, 8th, 11th, and 13th amendments, especially the last two.
6th Amendment: Guarantees fair and speedy jury trial and the rights to know the accusation, the accuser, and to find counsel and witnesses. 8th Amendment: Forbids exorbitant bails and fines and punishment that is unusual or cruel. 11th Amendment: State sovereign immunity. States are protected from suits by citizens living in another state or foreigners that do not reside within the state borders. 13th Amendment: Except as punishment for criminal offense, forbids forced-slavery and involuntary servitude. Many things in CURRENT DAY AFFAIRS fall under the topic of violation of the 11th and 13th amendments, which is pretty sad. this includes things like human trafficking, sex trafficking, and forced labor.
