Between shades of gray is about a young Lithuanian girl who is uprooted from the life she knew by the Soviet NKVDS, and she was unfairly labeled as a criminal and shoved into a work camp, basically a slave. Another character in the book, Mrs. Aryvadas, was forced to prostitute herself to the NKVD to protect her son under the threat of death if she didnt. This goes against the 6th, 8th, 11th, and 13th amendments, especially the last two.
6th Amendment: Guarantees fair and speedy jury trial and the rights to know the accusation, the accuser, and to find counsel and witnesses. 8th Amendment: Forbids exorbitant bails and fines and punishment that is unusual or cruel. 11th Amendment: State sovereign immunity. States are protected from suits by citizens living in another state or foreigners that do not reside within the state borders. 13th Amendment: Except as punishment for criminal offense, forbids forced-slavery and involuntary servitude. Many things in CURRENT DAY AFFAIRS fall under the topic of violation of the 11th and 13th amendments, which is pretty sad. this includes things like human trafficking, sex trafficking, and forced labor.

Between shades of grey is about a young Lithuanian girl who is ripped out of her comfortable life by Soviet NKVD's during WW2. The book follows our protagonist Lina throughout her journey in work camps and the hardships the Soviets pressed on her and her family, and teaches Lina some very important values she may not have appreciated before. The book ends with losses and gains. Its a note from the future, written by Lina as an adult, and details her experience in the NKVD work camps. the note tells us that they got out alive after long, hard years of work and even were able to marry. But soviets had assumed their homes, their names, and their very identities, and so these battered, bruised, and broken Europeans had returned to their homes only to find that they now had to start afresh. This horrible time was silenced by the USSR though, and many voices were extinguished forever. My book matters because it teaches everyone to appreciate what you have, and what some people give up for you, like hoe Lina's family gave up their freedom so that their cousins could escape the NKVD work camp horrors. Between Shades of Gray also teaches you about the value of family, and the value of what you have that others may not. This still matters today because in America, we're not a very wanting country, but others, like certain countries in Africa who face starvation and disease problems, so you should always keep that in mind. And family, that you should always value. |
