Between shades of grey is about a young Lithuanian girl who is ripped out of her comfortable life by Soviet NKVD's during WW2. The book follows our protagonist Lina throughout her journey in work camps and the hardships the Soviets pressed on her and her family, and teaches Lina some very important values she may not have appreciated before. The book ends with losses and gains. Its a note from the future, written by Lina as an adult, and details her experience in the NKVD work camps. the note tells us that they got out alive after long, hard years of work and even were able to marry. But soviets had assumed their homes, their names, and their very identities, and so these battered, bruised, and broken Europeans had returned to their homes only to find that they now had to start afresh. This horrible time was silenced by the USSR though, and many voices were extinguished forever. My book matters because it teaches everyone to appreciate what you have, and what some people give up for you, like hoe Lina's family gave up their freedom so that their cousins could escape the NKVD work camp horrors. Between Shades of Gray also teaches you about the value of family, and the value of what you have that others may not. This still matters today because in America, we're not a very wanting country, but others, like certain countries in Africa who face starvation and disease problems, so you should always keep that in mind. And family, that you should always value.
